The autograph of Schubert’s so-called “Wanderer Fantasy”, which served as the primary source, is dated November 1822. The first edition was published in 1823 by Cappi & Diabelli, Vienna. It, as well as the later “Titelauflage” (Titleedition, i.e., edition with new title-page) of Diabelli, in which a few mistakes of the first edition were corrected, were consulted only in cases of doubt. Important divergencies among the sources are listed in the Comments at the end of this volume. Markings missing in the sources, probably due to inadvertance, are parenthesized.
